My Journey With Shaving: From Cuts to Confidence

I got started on my journey with shaving in the worst way possible—even the kick-off was awkward, painful, bloody tissues, razor burn, it was patchy at best.

I was a teenager, and just staring into the mirror and trying to figure out how to use this item that I was now compelled to have, before I could be included with “men.” It was frustrating, and sometimes messy and scary – all while I was wondering if I was doing it “correctly.” And yet, over this long time, I learned to module what was once a daily challenge into a ritual that fueled my confidence.

In this blog, I will step you through all the phases of my journey with shaving (well, not all bad cuts!) from that first cut to a grooming routine to leave me feeling sharp and confident.  Whether you are just starting your journey, or climbing up a level on your grooming game, this article will equip you with useful tips, mistakes to avoid, product recommendations, and mindset changes that will transform your shave from crappy to classy.

Let’s get into it!

My Journey With Shaving: Teenage Trauma and Trial-and-Error

My Journey With Shaving: Teenage Trauma and Trial-and-Error

My shaving experience started when peach fuzz blossomed into a shadow under my nose. Like all teenage boys, I wanted to be an adult fast—and shaving seemed like the first step. What they don’t tell you is how little direction there is for beginners. I took my father’s foam, purchased some cheap disposable razors and without hesitation, went to work. The end moral was razor bumps, cuts on my neck, and a chin that looked like someone fought a battle.

I didn’t understand what the blade looked like. I didn’t know about skin prep. I didn’t appreciate shaving with the grain. But trial-and-error gave me some hard lessons: never shave dry, never be in a hurry, and always use clean, sharp tools.

The early mistakes, while not enjoyable, became the foundation for growth. Each cut brought me down to earth, and taught me something: why aftershave stings, and, the importance of exfoliating properly.

Gradually I escalated my research. I watched grooming videos on YouTube, began reading grooming blogs and ultimately trying out new routines. Slowly, the fear of shaving turned to an obsession.

My Journey With Shaving: Discovering the Right Tools and Techniques

My Journey With Shaving: Discovering the Right Tools and Techniques

The biggest turning point in my shaving journey was upgrading my tools. I moved on from the supermarket disposables to getting a safety razor. That one change changed my entire shaving experience.

A safety razor felt very classy, deliberate, and—most importantly—much less irritating. I paired my safety razor with a badger hair brush and a good quality shaving soap, and suddenly shaving felt like a ritual. I wasn’t doing random swipes or hurriedly scraping at the last minute. I learned to prepare my skin with warm water, apply a warm lather with my brush using gentle circles, and to always shave with the hair growth on the first pass.

Technique was also a huge factor. When I learned to hold the razor at the proper angle, to let it glide instead of forcing it, and to use short strokes—it changed the process completely. Shaving wasn’t just about getting the hair anymore. It was a skill I was developing.

I also discovered pre-shave oils and post-shave balms. These tools added comfort, hydration, and protection to the process and reduced irritation while improving the look of my skin. My bathroom shelf had become a grooming station.

My Journey With Shaving: From Routine to Ritual

The most unexpected thing about my shaving journey is that it transitioned from work to self-care. Shaving was now enjoyable, a way to reflect, reset, and care for myself.

My mornings turned peaceful with my step-by-step routine:

Cleaned my face with warm water

Used a pre-shave oil

Applied shaving cream with a brush

Used the safety razor with clean, slow strokes

Rinsed with cold water to close my pores

Applied an unapologetically alcohol-free balm to continuously hydrate everything

What had previously been a ten-minute effort became meditation. I was no longer in a hurry, scared of nicks and cuts, or regretting the dopamine dump of shaving. I was standing tall, looking in the mirror, and appreciating the clean, smooth finish.

Confidence became second-nature. I felt more together, more mature, and more in control of my look. Friends started to pick-up the routine. Compliments poured in. And  to be honest, that external validation made my internal confidence that much stronger.

Common Mistakes I Made (So You Don’t Have To)

Hindsight is 20/20, and there are a few painfully common mistakes I wish I could go back and warn my younger self about. Consider this your cheat sheet to avoid my unlucky setbacks:

1. Dry shaving – Just don’t do it. Always hydrate.

2. Using cheap razors – They’ll pull, tug, and you’ll end up bleeding. So, invest in a good quality razors.

3. Not changing blades often enough – A dull blade is a dangerous blade.

4. Not knowing what type of skin you have – Oily, dry, sensitive; if you don’t know your skin, you’ll pick the wrong products.

5. Shaving against the grain too early – This leads to ingrown hairs and razor bumps.

6. Not caring for post close shaves – No balm equals dry and irritated skin.

Shaving well requires technique, patience, and skin care, as emphasized in this comprehensive analysis on the importance of shaving for men’s health. If you get all these  right, then you’ll never look back.

Products That Changed the Game for Me

Over the years I discovered a few grooming necessities that made my shaving journey a lot smoother, both literally and figuratively.

Merkur Safety Razor 34C – Setting a standard for durability, balance and beginners.

Proraso Shaving Cream (Eucalyptus & Menthol) – Lovely, cool, and rich lather.

The Art of Shaving Pre-Shave Oil – Protection and softness before the shave.

Nivea Men Sensitive Post Shave Balm – Cool, calming, and non greasy.

Jack Black Face Buff Scrub – Perfect for exfoliating prior to a shave.

These are not extravagant products, these are solid long-term investments that give you a better shaving experience without spending a fortune.

How Shaving Boosted My Confidence Beyond the Mirror

Shaving is more than grooming; it’s a form of self-respect and confidence-building that can transform how you show up in the world. As I grew into a relationship with shaving, I started to notice how much better I felt after being freshly shaven. I stood a little taller, spoke with a little more clarity, and did not dread social situations as much.

Why? Because grooming gives you the power to control your outward perception. And once you can control what you want the world to see of you, you can also control how the world perceives you.

This doesn’t mean one needs to be vain — it’s about being ready to show up as your best self. If you are looking sharp, chances are you feel sharp! For me, being freshly shaven can help elevate my mood; make a good first impression or provide that extra little kick of confidence when needed during an interview, meeting, or date.

That confidence is not just shallow; it stems from discipline, self-respect, and doing something for yourself unlike any other grooming regiment available. Shaving allowed me to embrace this.

Tips for Your Own Journey With Shaving

If you’ve just begun or are still getting acclimated to the blade, here are a few quick hints to make your journey better:

Get to know your skin – Customize shaving products just for you.

Take your time – When you rush, you make mistakes.

Shave right after a hot shower – It softens the hair and opens pores.

Use good products – You will be shocked by the difference.

Practice consistency – The more you repeat something, the better you tend to become at it.

Honor the process – Good shaving is disciplined behavior.

Each face is different, and just like shaving, hair care routines also need personalization for the best results. The best part is that you can experiment—trying various blades, creams, and methods until you find the proper routine that works for you.

Conclusion

In conclusion, my journey with shaving has gone from awkward stubble and skin irritation to a practice that gives me power. I have learned valuable lessons about patience, the value of taking time for myself, and the satisfaction of mastering something uniquely my own.

Shaving is not only merely about hair removal, but it is also about controlling your own presentation and building confidence from within.

So, what does your own shaving journey look like so far?
